Should I top up over old insulation, or remove and replace it?
This is the question almost no insulation contractor will answer honestly, so here it is straight. You do not always need a full removal. If your existing insulation is sound, you usually just top up over it.
Top up over the existing insulation when:
- The old material is dry, clean, and free of rodent activity.
- It has simply settled or flattened and the depth is too low.
- The attic ventilation is still clear and there are no roof leaks.
- You want to lift the coverage from R20-something up to R50 or R60.
Remove and replace first when:
- The insulation is wet, water-stained, or sitting under an active leak.
- It is rodent-damaged, droppings, nesting, or a smell in the attic.

- It is so flattened and degraded that topping up would just bury a problem.

What R-value do I need for an attic in BC?
R-value measures how well insulation resists heat loss. The higher the number, the more heat your attic keeps in. BC's energy-efficiency building requirements set an attic minimum through the BC Building Code, but code and comfortable are not the same number, most Fraser Valley homes do better going above it. Is blown-in better than batts for an attic?
For an attic floor, blown-in usually wins. Batts are pre-cut, so they leave small gaps around joists and at the edges, and they lose R-value to air moving through those gaps. Blown-in loose-fill fills the whole floor evenly, including the awkward corners, and forms a more continuous layer. Batts still have their place in open walls.
Should I remove old attic insulation before adding new?
Not always. If the existing insulation is dry, clean, and rodent-free, you can blow new fibreglass straight over it to lift the R-value. You only need a removal first when the insulation is wet, contaminated, rodent-damaged, or so flattened it has stopped working. Cellulose or fibreglass blown-in for a Canadian climate?
Both insulate well. Cellulose is often praised for rodent and fire resistance thanks to its borate treatment, while fibreglass does not settle as heavily over time and does not absorb moisture.
